Margaret A. Whalen

SHREWSBURY: Margaret A. Whalen, 97, a local resident for nearly 3 years, and a former lifelong resident of Maine, died Friday January 24, 2014 at Shrewsbury Crossings.

Born in Bangor, she was a daughter of the late Patrick E. and Sadie (Kennedy) Whalen. A graduate of Danforth High School in 1935, she earned her undergraduate degree at Colby College in 1939 and an advanced degree from Simmons College in Boston in 1944. Margaret was employed for many years as the state of Maine Librarian and Archivist in Augusta and was a life member of the American Historical Society as well as an avid reader.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Frances Whalen of Augusta Maine; a niece, Mary Ellen Logue and her husband Robert of Sutton; a grandnephew, Michael J. Whalen of Sutton and a grandniece, Christine E. Logue-Casali and her husband Dean of Framingham; and a great-grandniece, Eva Mei Casali. She was the sister of the late Patricia E. Cole.

Visiting hours are Wednesday, Jan. 29th from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Boyle Bros. Funeral Home, 173 Union Ave., Framingham. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, Jan. 30th at 9:00 am at St. Bridget’s Church, 830 Worcester Rd., Rte. 9 East, Framingham. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Catholic Cemetery in Bangor, Maine. Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in Margaret’s name be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA. 01701.
